So many artists, so many songs, so little time. Each week we review a handful of new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, track premieres, and more all day. We update a playlist weekly of some of our current favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place.
FENTANYL – “OR SO I TOUGHT,” “BLIND,” & “DETACHED”
Fentanyl is a new San Francisco hardcore band with members of Spiritual Cramp, Spy, and World Peace, and they make raw, fast, sometimes-powerviolencey hardcore songs that don’t use any distortion pedals, just the natural gain from turning their guitar amps all the way up. Their self-titled debut album comes out September 13 via Convulse Records, and three tracks are out now.

MAN’S GIN (COBALT) – “ONE MAN DOWN”
Cobalt member Erik Wunder has announced a new Man’s Gin album, The Reprobate, due September 6 via Profound Lore. Here’s the brooding, gothy lead single “One Man Down.”

BOTFLY – “ELLE IS FOR LOVE”
Canadian post-hardcore band Botfly have announced a new EP, Open Letters, due this fall via No Funeral. Here’s the shapeshifting lead single “Elle Is For Love.”

NARA’S ROOM – “HOLDEN” & “WAITING FOR THE Z”
Brooklyn-based band Nara’s Room have a new album, Glassy star, on the way, due out on October 18 via Mtn Laurel Recording CO. They’ve shared two new singles, “Holden,” which Nara Avakian says is “inspired by elements of trip hop,” and “Waiting for the z,” which they say was “scrawled on a receipt years before the realization of ‘Holden’ during a slow shift behind the counter of a comic shop.”

NATE MERCEREAU – “SOUND WITHIN SOUND”
Nate Mercereau, who was among the core lineup on André 3000’s New Blue Sun, has announced his own new album, Excellent Traveler, due October 11 via Third Man. André returns the favor by appearing on this one, and it also features New Blue Sun contributor Carlos Niño, as well as Shabaka Hutchings, Kamasi Washington, Laraaji, and more. The first taste is the four-minute ambient track “Sound Within Sound.”

HORSE JUMPER OF LOVE – “WORD”
Horse Jumper of Love’s new album Disaster Trick comes out this Friday, and ahead of that they’ve given us a final advance single, the slowcore-tinged “Word.” “This song is about the distortion of reality, specifically how your sense of time and reality becomes distorted through someone else’s sense of it,” frontman Dimitri Giannopoulos says. “You try to fit into someone else’s idea of their future, because of love or indecision or insecurity. Maybe that someone is more confident than you and has power over you? An issue I’ve struggled with is feeling unworthy of creating my own future, so I’ve relied on other people for guidance, whether it was family, friends, or lovers. This theme is boiled down in this song as a fight between two romantically involved people and how love and the anxiety associated with it is so powerful it can make you feel separate from the rest of the world. This distortion reveals itself in the lyric ‘Milking of the ax handle’ a literal image of distorted reality. I got the idea from the movie Häxan when they show a drawing of a witch milking an ax instead of a cow.”

REVIVAL SEASON – “DIM SUM”
Atlanta alt hip hop duo duo Revival Season released their debut album Golden Age Of Self Snitching back in January and are now back with this funky new single.

TIM HEIDECKER – “LIKE I DO”
Tim Heidecker’s new album of serious music, Slipping Away, is out in October and he’s just shared this new single that has a bit of Bob Seger in it.

PANDA BEAR & SONIC BOOM – “RESET MARIACHI”
Panda Bear and Sonic Boom released their wonderful album Reset in 2022 and then a dub version of the album made with On-U Sound’s Adrian Sherwood in 2023. Now they’ve released an EP of Reset songs reimagined with Mexico City’s Mariachi 2000 de Cutberto Pérez. Pete Kember, who is Sonic Boom, says Reset Mariachi is “the final chapter in the Reset story.”

CHRISTOPHER OWENS – “NO GOOD”
Christopher Owens, formerly of Girls, announced his first new album in seven years, I Wanna Run Barefoot Through Your Hair, and shared another advance single, which you can read more about here.

LEILA ABDUL-RAUF – “CRIMES OF THE SOUL”
Leila Abdul-Rauf (of Vastum, Ionophore, Cardinal Wyrm, Fyrhtu, and other bands) is releasing her fifth solo album, Calls From A Seething Edge, this October. Read about new single “Crimes of the Soul” here.
