So many artists, so many songs, so little time. Each week we review a handful of new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, track premieres, and more all day. We update a playlist weekly of some of our current favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place.
FUGITIVE – “SPHERES OF VIRULENCE”
Fugitive, the band with Power Trip guitarist Blake Ibanez and current Power Trip vocalist Seth Gilmore, have signed to Blue Grape Music (the ex-Roadrunner label that’s also home to to Superheaven, Code Orange, and more), and their first single for the label is the thrash ripper “Spheres of Virulence.”

DEADGUY – “NEW BEST FRIEND”
Metalcore pioneers Deadguy have shared the second single from Near-Death Travel Services, their first album in 30 years. Like lead single “Kill Fee,” it has no lack of classic Deadguy hallmarks.

THE DIRTY NIL – “SPIDER DREAM”
Ontario punks The Dirty Nil have shared another taste of their upcoming LP The Lash, and this one finds the band embracing their ballad side.

BLONDE REDHEAD – BEFORE (CHOIR VERSION) FT BROOKLYN YOUTH CHORUS
Blonde Redhead have reimagined their 2024 album Sit Down for Dinner as The Shadow of the Guest which will be out June 27 via section1. It features versions of the songs with Brooklyn Youth Chorus, and a few ASMR remixes. “The album started as a soundtrack that I produced for my closest buddy Isabel Marant’s fashion show,” says Kazu Makino. “I often play her my early demos and things that I am making and I told her I want to make ASMR using parts and fragments of our songs. It was such a great musical exercise for me. She came with me to the studio in Paris, wrote phrases in French and we had a good laugh at my pronunciation. This is an important release for us. They are not just a rendition of the latest but a long time dream that finally came true.”

SOFIA KOURTESIS – “UNIDOS” (FT. DAPHNI)
Sofia Kourtesis announced a new EP, Volver, due out on August 1 via Ninja Tune. The first single is “Unidos,” a collaboration with Daphni, aka Caribou’s Dan Snaith. “It was immediately evident that it was a massive track,” he said. “To be clear, all the good ideas in this track are Sofia’s. I just added some drums and pumped up the arrangement.” Sofia added, “‘Unidos’ is about the power and beauty of how much stronger we are together. I always admire the light and the beautiful shine of Dan, he is a hero and he is so generous without making a big bas about it.”

COMET GAIN – “BEAT OF THE VEINS”
DIY indie cult heroes Comet Gain will release new album Letters To Ordinary Outsiders on June 6 via Tapete. David Feck and co are in scrappy fine form on “Beat of the Veins.”

GOOD LOOKS – “I DON’T WANT TO DIE”
Texas band Good Looks are giving their great 2024 album Lived Here for a While the Deluxe Edition treatment this week via Keeled Scales. “I Don’t Want to Die” is one of three new songs that have been added to the end and is as hooky and inventive as anything else on the album.

MOONTYPE – “STARRY EYED”
Chicago’s Moontype are following up 2021’s Bodies of Water with I Let The Wind Push Down On Me next week and here’s the new single. “This song is about coming to terms with how much I relied on alcohol to regulate my emotions,” says Margaret McCarthy. “Pick your poison, however you want to escape. It’s a habit that’s hard to break, a door that keeps opening.”

SUNYEARS (PETER BJORN AND JOHN) – “LAST NIGHT ON THE MOUNTAIN” FT LISA HANNIGAN & SAM GENDERS
SunYears, aka Peter Morén of Peter Bjorn and John, will release new album The Song Forlorn on August 21. This new single features Tunng’s Sam Genders and singer-songwriter Lisa Hannigan. “Sam Genders was a delight to work with,” Peter says. “‘Last Night On the Mountain’ feels almost sea-shantiesque. The verse stood against a bigger rhythmical chorus and a middle-eight that is very ‘me’ somehow. A nice construction, feel and sentiment on the whole. I can’t exactly remember how we did it, but I do think the majority of the lyrics came from Sam and the majority of the music came from me.I was happy with the result, but I always heard more voices. And the first voice I thought of in this context was Lisa Hannigan. I love her records, I’m a longtime fan, and just knew it would fit.”

JEHNNY BETH – “BROKEN RIB”
“We’re living in a dark time, full of drama and barbarous tragedy,” Savages’ Jehnny Beth says of her new solo album. “It became clear to me that, in these times, we either learn how to scream really well, or we learn how to whisper.” She does a bit of both on the album’s first single.

LAUFEY – “TOUGH LUCK”

NATION OF LANGUAGE – “INEPT APOLLO”
Nation of Language have signed to Sub Pop and released their first single for the label. “Inept Apollo” is an instantly appealing synthpop track, melodic and understated. It’s a grower.

WOLF ALICE – “BLOOM BABY BLOOM”
Wolf Alice are back with their first new music in three years. “Bloom Baby Bloom” is also the first single off their new album, and you can read more about it here.
