12 New Songs Out Today

So many artists, so many songs, so little time. Each week we review a handful of new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, track premieres, and more all day. We update a playlist weekly of some of our current favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place.

GETDOWN SERVICES – “CHA CHA SLIDE”

We’re a month away from Sheffield duo Getdown Services’ new album Massive Champion and here’s the third single. “Cha Cha Slide” stakes stock in the pros and cons of partying but also “about self pity and realizing that maybe all of the healing your inner child stuff you hear about isn’t actually total bollocks. Musically and lyrically I think it’s about us trying to clean up our act a bit.”

THE LAST DINNER PARTY – “KNOCKING AT THE SKY”

The Last Dinner Party call “Knocking at the Sky” the “final tale from The Pyre,” adding, “After creating an album about storytelling and world-building, we thought it apt to end this act with a story set in the sinister myth world itself: Los Angeles. Hollywood is the ultimate fairytale; the stakes are at surreal heights, the landscape is unruly and plastic, and it’s populated with a cast of Grimm characters all striving and struggling at the center of their own hero’s journey.”

HARUOMI HOSONO – “NOTE OF MOTHERSHIP”

“For the past several years, I have been contemplating the maternal presence that envelops the Earth,” Yellow Magic Orchestra cofounder Haruomi Hosono says of this song. “I believe expressions like ‘Mother Earth’ and ‘Mother Nature’ were born from an intuitive understanding of the strict yet tender compassion that our human progenitor holds. Yet, as a consequence of twentieth-century materialism, humanity now stands at a chaotic crossroads. Through the powerless, solitary experiences brought on by great earthquakes and the spread of pandemics, I sensed that something had begun to stir. As if instincts long dormant in the depths of our hearts—maternal love, compassion—had begun to stir, the current of consciousness ceased to remain confined to the individual and began to move as a quiet, flowing stream.” New album Yours Sincerely is out September 11.

MEANINGFUL STONE – “1+1=0” (FT. JAY SOM)

South Korean artist Meaningful Stone (aka Kim Jimin) has shared a shimmery new Jay Som collaboration, “1+1=0,” that they worked on together while Jimin was in Los Angeles earlier this year.

SAM AND LOUISE SULLIVAN – “LOVE & DEVOTION”

There is a sultry sweet soulfulness to “Love & Devotion,” which is the title track to Sam and Louise Sullivan’s new album and they call their “our folk-rock wedding song.”

ED O’BRIEN – “ABBERYCWMHIR”

Radiohead guitarist Ed O’Brien released his very good second album B Blue Morpho earlier this year and here’s a track that came as a bonus 7″. “Abbeycwmhir” is roughly “Abbey in the Long Valley” in Welsh, and has more of that lush vibe the album has.

MATT POND PA – “ENDLESS SUMMER”

Matt Pond PA announced a new album, Permanent Change – Part 1, due out October 9. “To me, this album is like an endless, fading summer afternoon,” he says. “It’s about embracing imperfection and being able, for one brief moment, to let go of worry. It’s about looking back on mistakes with pride. It’s about the way life can feel like a constant audition, and then the attempt to finally let that idea fall away.” He’s shared the first single, “Endless Summer.”

ANDY BELL & MASAL – “THE MORNING OF THE TRIP”

Andy Bell of Ride and Oasis has re-teamed with harp and synth duo Masal for new album Common Primitives that will be out October 9 via Sonic Cathedral. Check out the first single now and Andy Bell notes, “I tried to play as if my guitar was a waterfall.”

FREAK SLUG – “GIRL, INTENTIONS”

UK musician Freak Slug (Xenya Genovese) has announced her second album, Amulet, which will be out September 18 via Future Classic, and shared the first single. “This first single off my upcoming album Amulet explores the inner turmoil of a woman, with the feminine often represented by the moon as darkness,” she says. “It’s an ode to myself – feeling the presence and power of one’s soul, dark and light, and seeing in yourself what nobody else can see until you show them what you’re capable of. I’ve had no previous examples of Northern women from Manchester singing like this, so I decided that I want to fucking do it. I love singers with character in their vocals. It’s about leaning into the quirks of your voice instead of trying to make it perfect.”
