So many artists, so many songs, so little time. Each week we review a handful of new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, track premieres, and more all day. We update a playlist weekly of some of our current favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place.
PLOSIVS (PINBACK, ROCKET FROM THE CRYPT, etc) – “METACINE”
PLOSIVS, the supergroup of Rob Crow (Pinback), John Reis (Rocket from the Crypt, Hot Snakes, Drive Like Jehu, etc), Atom Willard (Rocket from the Crypt, Alkaline Trio, Against Me!, etc), and Jordan Clark (Mrs Magician), have announced their second album, Yell at Cloud, due November 28 via Swami Records. First single “Metacine” is another great example of what made the band’s 2022 self-titled debut so appealing.

THIS IS LORELEI – “HOLO BOY”
This is Lorelei’s album of re-recorded older material, Holo Boy, is out next month, and he’s shared the title track, whose name comes from a holodeck from Star Trek. “‘Holo Boy’ was originally written in Chicago sometime in 2014 or 2015,” he says. “I’m pretty sure it’s the oldest song on the album and I’m pretty sure it’s one of my favorites.”

BLACKWATER HOLYLIGHT – “HEAVY, WHY?”
LA doom-gazers Blackwater Holylight have announced their fourth album, Not Here Not Gone, due January 30 via Suicide Squeeze. The album was recorded by Sonny Diperri (DIIV, Nothing, etc) at El Paso’s Sonic Ranch studio and features production work from Dave Sitek, and the first single is the dark ethereal “Heavy, Why?”.

RAGANA + DROWSE – “AFTER IMAGE”
Drowse’s Kyle Bates says “After Image,” the latest single from their new album with Ragana, is about “how self-perception is often linked to place: I tend to want to designate eras of my life around places that I have lived and think of aspects of myself as coming from or belonging to those places. It is also about the desire to forget memories associated with these places. The reality is that, although we may be able to physically move from a place and ‘move on’ from a person or event, those various aspects of ourselves, and our memories of the events that created them, all make up a greater whole. There is no moving away from the self. We may forget a specific event, but it has still permanently adjusted the shape of our life. In gestalt psychology the ‘parts,’ are defined by the whole, not the other way around: the dark plume of an eruption is made of thousands of fragments of ash, yet we view it as a single giant clouded form.” Ash Souvenir is out this Friday.

AIMEE MANN – “RAINY DAYS AND MONDAYS” (CARPENTERS COVER)
Tim Robinson’s new HBO show The Chair Company features a few songs comissioned just for the show, like this faithful cover of Carpenters’ classic “Rainy Days and Mondays” by Aimee Mann

CHARLI XCX – “HOUSE” FT. JOHN CALE
Charli XCX’s first song off Emerald Fennell’s new adaptation of Wuthering Heights is here, and it features John Cale of The Velvet Underground. Read more about it here.

ARLO PARKS – “NEW DESIRE”
Arlo Parks is working on their follow-up to 2023’s My Soft Machine, and while there are no details on that yet, they’ve shared a new song called “New Desire.”

MADI DIAZ – ENEMA OF THE (GARDEN) STATE
Madi Diaz released a full-album cover of blink-182’s Enema of the State to benefit Defending Our Neighbors Fund.

GETDOWN SERVICES – “DON’T CHEESE ME OFF”
Bristol duo Getdown Services just released odds-and-ends comp Crumbs 2 which includes this funky new single.

MURAT EVGIN – “NOBODY TOLD ME” (JOHN LENNON COVER)
New AppleTV+ series Pluribus, which is from Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan, features covers of popular songs by international artists in the closing credits of each episode. This is Turkish musician Murat Evgin’s take on John Lennon’s “Nobody Told Me.”

BACKENGRILLEN (REFUSED) – “A HATE INFERIOR”
Backengrillen is the punk-jazz band featuring Refused members Dennis Lyxzén (vocals), Magnus Flagge (Bass) and David Sandström (drums) and veteran saxophonist Mats Gustafsson, and their self-titled debut album comes out in January via Svart Records.
