So many artists, so many songs, so little time. Each week we review a handful of new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, track premieres, and more all day. We update a playlist weekly of some of our current favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place.
YEAR OF THE COBRA – “WAR DROP”
Seattle sludgesters Year of the Cobra have announced a new self-titled album, due February 28 via Prophecy Productions, and first single “War Drop” is equal parts heavy and soaringly catchy.

ANNA B SAVAGE – “LIGHTHOUSE”
Anna B Savage says “Lighthouse,” the latest single from her new album You & I Are Earth, is “a gentle love song about how I presumed I would end up alone, but found someone who makes me feel held, safe and still a sort of (if you’ll forgive me) independent ship in the night. I tried to keep the production relatively simple like the song, as that’s how the emotion feels also. It’s just nice.”

LUCINDA WILLIAMS – “WHILE MY GUITAR GENTLY WEEPS” (THE BEATLES COVER)
Lucinda Williams will release a live-in-studio Beatles covers album, Lucinda Williams Sings The Beatles From Abbey Road, this Friday. While you wait, here’s her great take on “While My Guitar Gently Weeps.”

BONNIE ‘PRINCE’ BILLY – “LONDON MAY”
Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy’s new album The Purple Bird comes out in January, and he’s given us another early taste with “London May.” It was original written for a horror movie, Night of the Bastard, with Samhaim drummer London May, Will Oldham’s longtime friend. “I made up a song for him that combined some of the things I felt we shared,” Oldham says, adding, “When David Ferguson and I were putting songs together for The Purple Bird sessions, I remembered the song I’d made for London’s film; I was performing it regularly live, and it didn’t feel quite complete… Ferg was game, and we tracked it. I’d long begun to want to hear other voices in the song. In the end, we roped in the phenomenal Kentucky-born singer Brit Taylor to sing harmonies and other supporting parts. Her voice is stellar to say the least.”

GIRLPUPPY – “CHAMP”
girlpuppy, the musical alter ego of Atlanta’s Becca Harvey, has signed with Captured Tracks and released her first single for the label, along with a well-shot video. “The idea for the ‘Champ’ music video came super easily for me,” says Becca. “‘Champ’ is all about feeling like a loser in a friendship you so desperately want to save. I bought the boxing shorts with ‘girlpuppy’ embroidered on them on Etsy months before we filmed the video, because I knew I’d want the video to be boxing themed. Benni and Augie had a perfect treatment for it and it was so fun getting to work with them. I also recruited my friend Chris Black from my favorite podcast How Long Gone to play my deadbeat coach, my bestie Merian from the band Suzy Clue to play my formidable opponent, my partner, Miles, to play her hot shot coach, and our friend Zack to play the ref. I also had plenty of my friends to play spectators in the crowd around the ring. It was so fun to work with all of my friends and get all fake bloody and get a nice workout in.”

JASMINE.4.T – “YOU ARE THE MORNING”
“This song is about the healing found in queer friendship,” jasmine.4.t says of the latest single from her debut album You Are The Morning. “It is about queer people’s resilience in the face of violence. It is about our potential to bring about change within ourselves, those around us, and the world at large. I think trans people in particular have an incredible ability to change this world. Of course, we are challenging norms of gender/sex. Beyond that, this year we have seen trans people dismantling violent machines of all forms to help manifest a bright future. This is what ‘you are the morning’ has come to mean – it is an awakening to our power, and a call to action.”

Brooklyn post-punks TVOD have signed to Montreal label Mothland and have just released their first single for the label. “Car Wreck” is a scum-surfin’ ripper.

WHY BONNIE – “RAINBOWS AND RIDGES” (BLAZE FOLEY COVER)
“This is a cover of one of my favorite songs,” Why Bonnie vocalist Blair Howerton says of the band’s new single, which follows their 2024 album Wish on the Bone. “It highlights the duality of life — all of the beauty and all of the pain.”

DAVID GRUBBS – “THE SNAKE ON ITS TAIL”
David Grubbs, member of such indie rock groups as Gastr del Sol, Squirrel Bait, and Bastro, will release instrumental album Whistle from Above on February 28 via Drag City.

CHEEKFACE – “HARD MODE”
“I guess being in a band is a pretty hard-mode activity in general,” says Cheekface frontman Greg Katz of the band’s new single. “I think the start of this musical idea was us wanting to do a dance song with a skittering hi-hat beat. Mandy came up with the super syncopated bassline and then I added the chunky guitar riff that became the chorus. It started as a really short song idea, maybe just 2 minutes long. But once the three of us started to learn it, we were having fun with the groove and wanted it to just keep going, so we stretched it out with the instrumental section.”

BONNIE TRASH – “VEIL OF GREED”
Toronto gothy post-punks Bonnie Trash, led by twins Emmalia & Sarafina Bortolon-Vettor, have announced a new album, Mourning You, which will be out February 28 via Hand Drawn Dracula. Sarafina says the album is about “losing someone you love. It’s about the horrors of grief, haunting you every day.” This is the first single.
