So many artists, so many songs, so little time. Each week we review a handful of new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, track premieres, and more all day. We update a playlist weekly of some of our current favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place.
LAURA VEIRS – “PULSE”
“This song is about feeling the pulse of being alive—trusting that something good is still moving toward us, even in the middle of chaos and suffering,” Laura Veirs says. “It’s the most sonically dense track on the album, and building it piece by piece in the studio was fun. I played my niece’s bass and my stepkids’ drums, which gave it this layered, familial energy. My favorite moment is the dissonant duet between my electric guitar and the sax, played by special guest ‘Filthy’ Lucre—I love the feelings of tension and release. We carried that energy into the video, which features my blended family in a home gym setting. The video takes some bizarre turns with cake and silly string, which fits the chaos and playfulness of the music. I liked the idea of making an exercise video—partly as a nod to the elevated pulse of the title, and partly because I’ve gotten into weightlifting in recent years. I can now deadlift 110 pounds, which still surprises me.” New album Temple Songs is out August 14.

WHITMER THOMAS – “CANDY CORN”
Musician and comedian Whitmer Thomas has signed to Fire Talk and released his first single for the label, “Candy Corn,” sharing a video that features Joe Pera and Carmen Christopher. “Yhis is my broadest attempt to write about what youth felt like, looking back as an aging knucklehead,” he says.

TWIN BLOOM – “SUMMER’S GONE”
Oakland, CA’s Twin Bloom make janglepop in the tradition of Teenage Fanclub and Tommy Keene and will release their new self-titled EP on July 10 via Dandy Boy. Summer’s only just started but we understand the feeling here.

HURRY – “THE DUMBEST PERSON YOU’VE EVER SEEN”
Hurry’s seventh album, Zoned Out, arrives next week, and ahead of that they’ve shared a final advance single, “The Dumbest Person You’ve Ever Seen.” Matt Scottoline says, “Time moves quickly, and it’s easy to find yourself following the same well-worn path. You walk the same blocks every day, go to the same coffee shop, see the same people. Eventually the city starts to fade into the background. ‘The Dumbest Person You’ve Ever Seen’ is about meeting someone who suddenly pulls you out of that routine. I guess the title isn’t totally about stupidity—it’s more about the moment when someone makes you forget how to be the composed version of yourself.”

ANGELA AUTUMN – “MOUNTAIN STREAM”
Nashville-based musician Angela Autumn will release new album Believer on September 11 via Gar Hole. ““The song ‘Mountain Stream’ is a slack-tuned anthem about escaping something,” Autumn says of this first single. “It came to me one night when I was on a medicine journey and felt very otherworldly. I began singing words that did not feel like my own.”

SUSANNAH JOFFE – “HAPPINESS IS JUST A MYTH”
“‘Happiness Is Just a Myth’ is a song about constantly chasing fulfillment through the ideas we tell ourselves about happiness, only to come up empty,” NYC-based alt-pop singer/songwriter Susannah Joffe says of her new single. “For me, that pursuit has always looked like career success. This is my favorite song I’ve ever made, largely because of its unique production and unconventional structure.”

THE WOLFGANG PRESS – “SPEAKERS DON’T SPEAK”
Eighties-era 4AD vets The Wolfgang Press have announced a new album, Asylum Variations, which will be out September 25 via Downwards Records. This is their second album since reforming after nearly 30 years away. This is the first single — it’s good.

STAB – “IRISH GOODBYE”
New England band Stab have announced their debut album, Lost in Maine, due out July 24 via Unbeaten Records, and shared a new single, anthemic, melodic hardcore track “Irish Goodbye.”

SADURN – “WHOLE THING”
Philadelphia band Sadurn announced their second album, The Underworld, and gave us the first taste with indie country track “whole thing,” which you can read more about here.

CHEEKFACE – “NO FLY ZONE”
Cheekface have shared a final advance single ahead of their new album Podium, the wry “No Fly Zone.”
