Nine Inch Nails to score ‘Tron: Ares’ sci-fi sequel

Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross stay very busy as film and TV composers, most recently on their awesome Challengers soundtrack. Among their upcoming projects, and credited to Nine Inch Nails, is Tron: Ares, the third film in the Tron series which will be released by Disney in October 2025.

Details of Tron: Ares were shared at Disney’s annual D3 industry event this weekend, and the presentation had “Music by NIN” written out with lasers. The Tron series has, collectively, an extremely cool list of composers. Synth icon Wendy Carlos did the music for the original 1982 cult classic, and then Daft Punk worked on 2010’s Tron: Legacy.

As for the film, it stars Jared Leto, Greta Lee, Evan Peters, Hasan Minhaj, Jodie Turner-Smith, Arturo Castro, Cameron Monaghan, Gillian Anderson, and Jeff Bridges (who starred in the original and Legacy), and was directed by Norwegian filmmaker Joachim Rønning (Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, this year’s Young Woman and the Sea). Leto plays Ares, a “highly sophisticated Program…who is sent from the digital world into the real world on a dangerous mission, marking humankind’s first encounter with A.I. beings.” A trailer was shown at D3 but that hasn’t been made available online yet.

You can watch the Tron: Ares D3 announcement with Bridges Leto, and Lee below, along with a little teaser via NIN.

Reznor and Ross have also composed the score for Challengers director Luca Gaudino’s next film, Queer, and The Gorge, which stars Anya Taylor-Joy and Miles Teller and was directed by Scott Derrickson (Doctor Strange, The Black Phone).
