Oscar-nominated filmmaker Sam Mendes (American Beauty, 1917, Skyfall) has announced a very ambitious project – telling the story of The Beatles via four interconnected biopics, each focusing on a different member of the band (John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr) and all to be released in 2027.
“I’m honored to be telling the story of the greatest rock band of all time, and excited to challenge the notion of what constitutes a trip to the movies,” says Mendes in a statement. While this is far from the first scripted Beatles-related movie to be made since the Fab Four broke up in 1970, it is the first to have full cooperation from surviving members Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, the George Harrison and John Lennon Estates, and Apple Records.
Sony Pictures will be releasing the films and while details on how they’ll come out has not been announced, producer Pippa Harris says, “We intend this to be a uniquely thrilling, and epic cinematic experience: four films, told from four different perspectives which tell a single story about the most celebrated band of all time. To have The Beatles’ and Apple Corps’ blessing to do this is an immense privilege.”
Stay tuned for more details.
