Back in November, Alabama Shakes leader and solo artist Brittany Howard announced that she’d be throwing a hardcore/punk show in Nashville to help benefit local organizations, with Snõõper, Inner Peace, Second Spirit, and the debut of Brittany’s own new hardcore band Kumite, for which Brittany was backed by the members of Second Spirit. We hadn’t heard any of Kumite’s music before the show, but now video has surfaced and they look and sound pretty awesome. The clips we’ve seen find Kumite dishing out sludgy, metallic hardcore with Brittany in the forefront letting out piercing screams. There’s also a short video of Kumite covering American Nightmare‘s classic “AM/PM” with Brittany switching to guitar and Second Spirit’s vocalist taking over on lead vocals.

Ahead of the show, Brittany posted the following statement:

Looking forward to Sunday night’s show in Nashville, it is about two things that are very important to me. First and foremost, raising money and awareness for three amazing organizations that are doing incredible work right here in our community. I am donating all profits from this show to Second Harvest Food Bank, Nashville Launch Pad, & Southern Movement Committee. Besides buying a ticket, there are other ways you can help on Sunday. Please consider: contributing to our food and clothing drives, donating to help feed, clothe, and house our Nashville community, and signing up to volunteer your time with one of these organizations (see next slides for details).
Second, Sunday night is about bringing people together who support a message of peace, love and inclusion. To be honest, it is less about a concert or making a statement musically and more about uniting people in a safe place during these crazy times we are living in. I really hope Sunday accomplishes this mission. Thank you so much for supporting and for spreading love.
