The Smashing Pumpkins are currently on tour opening for Green Day, and they had a surprise in store during their set at last night’s show (9/25) at Portland, OR’s Providence Park. They brought out Deftones vocalist Chino Moreno to sing guest lead vocals on their Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness classic “Jellybelly.” The song’s mix of heavy riffage and airy atmosphere is a clear predecessor to Deftones’ own music, and Chino not surprisingly sounded great singing it, just like he did when he joined the Pumpkins in NJ for two songs in 2018. The tour has Green Day playing Dookie and American Idiot in full, and also features Rancid and The Linda Lindas. We caught the tour at Citi Field back in August, and the Pumpkins were great then too. They broke out plenty of classics at that show too, and there’s no denying the power of those enduring songs. The final date of the tour is in San Diego’s Petco Park on Saturday (9/28).
Deftones also just announced a tour with The Mars Volta and Fleshwater for 2025, including shows at NYC’s Madison Square Garden on April 3 and NJ’s Prudential Center on April 9.
