As previously announced, the surviving members of Soundgarden teamed up to play a show under the Soundgarden anagram Nudedragons–with Shaina Shepherd on vocals–marking one of the only times they’ve reunited since Chris Cornell’s 2017 death. It took place at Seattle’s Showbox on Saturday (12/14) as part of the SMooCH benefit show for Seattle Children’s Hospital, and they played five Soundgarden classics, plus a cover of “Kick out the Jams” by the MC5, whose 50th anniversary tour included Soundgarden’s Kim Thayil as a member. For the last two songs, they were joined by Guns N’ Roses’ Duff McKagan, who also played at his own set at the show. Watch a full-set video below.
Soundgarden wasn’t the only reunion at this year’s SMooCH benefit. Sebadoh, the classic indie rock band led by Dinosaur Jr bassist Lou Barlow, also played their first show in five years. They played a full 15-song set that was heavy on 1994’s beloved Bakesale, plus some other ’90s material and a couple songs from their most recent album, 2019’s Act Surprised. Lou, who was SST labelmates with Soundgarden in the early Dinosaur Jr days, also posted photos of himself with Kim Thayil and Void’s Bubba Dupree to Instagram, and wrote:
#1 I am psyched t say that I am the first member of Dinosaur Jr to meet Kim Thayil.. he and I had a sweet lil chat about how he equated the first Dinosaur LP t the mighty Meat Puppets and that Chris Cornell introduced his band mates to our second LP You’re Living All Over Me.. the rise of Soundgarden was exciting for us too and this is a connection I was v happy t make.. #2 Kim introduced me to this guy: Bubba Dupree..from VOID! that’s right.. to say that Bubba’s guitar attack lead the way t and thru post-hardcore, grunge is an understatement.. VOID were literally the fucking bomb that blew our collective minds and inspired us t put the pieces back together in our own ways, ditching the stylistic restraints of punk and making anything seem possible. I was legitimately blown away to meet this guy and he tolerated my breathless praise well.. on top of that, years ago I heard an unbelievably good @moby live-on-the-radio session of a Hendrix cover that I still think of.. did Moby play guitar on it? I wondered…if not who did? well it may have been Bubba ‘cause he played in Moby’s band during that approximate period.. mind blown..and good move tapping Bubba Moby, had no idea
