Touché Amoré have announced their sixth album, Spiral In A Straight Line, due October 11 via their new label home of Rise Records, following two albums for Epitaph (pre-order). It’s their second consecutive album produced by Ross Robinson, and it features guest vocals from longtime collaborator Julien Baker on closing track “Goodbye For Now,” as well as from Lou Barlow (of Dinosaur Jr., Sebadoh, and The Folk Implosion) singing part of Sebadoh’s own “Brand New Love” on “Subversion (Brand New Love).”
The first single is opening track “Nobody’s,” which the band recently played live at Outbreak Fest and Sound & Fury. It’s another great example of the band’s ability to go in a calmer, more melodic direction and still sound distinctly like Touché Amoré, and vocalist Jeremy Bolm describes it like this: “In just a handful of lyrics, it gives the broad strokes of the album. A song and record about forward movement while everything around you becomes destabilized.” The song also comes with a Sean Stout-directed video made up of live-in-studio footage, and it doubles as the first part of the accompanying Spiral In A Straight Line visual album. Touché have also announced a headlining fall tour with a stacked list of support bands, including two other boundary-pushing, hardcore-informed bands, Soul Glo and Portrayal of Guilt, as well as their dream-poppy LA neighbors Soft Blue Shimmer. The tour begins on October 9 in the band’s hometown and wraps up in Boston on November 3. Tickets go on artist presale today (7/24) at 10 AM local, and the general public on-sale begins Friday (7/26) at 10 AM local. All dates are listed below.
The tour surrounds Touché’s return to The Fest, which they haven’t played since their storied 2014 Fest set at Eight Seconds, the one the band was playing when Jeremy got the voicemail that his mother had passed, a moment immortalized by the band’s beloved 2016 album Stage Four. Touché’s 2024 Fest schedule includes a Saturday (10/26) show back at that same venue (which is now called Vivid Music Hall) with screamo legends pageninetynine and City of Caterpillar; Touché’s screamo contemporaries Caravels, Gillian Carter, and State Faults; DC hardcore vets Scream; Sweat (ex-Graf Orlock); Mugger (ex-Creepoid); and more). They also play a Sunday (10/27) show at the big outdoor Bo Diddley Plaza with their tourmates Soul Glo, their old pals Joyce Manor, The Bouncing Souls (playing How I Spent My Summer Vacation and Anchors Aweigh), Ted Leo and the Pharmacists (playing Shake the Sheets), War On Women, and Matt & Kim. The Fest happens a little earlier than Halloween proper this year (and it remains to be seen if the band will bring back their Halloween-friendly Fest ghost alter-egos, “Boo-che Amoré”), but Touché play Brooklyn on Halloween (10/31) at Warsaw.
Soul Glo, who were previously signed to Jeremy Bolm’s Secret Voice label before becoming Epitaph labelmates with Touché, recently toured with Mannequin Pussy and put on a killer set at Brooklyn Steel. Their latest album is Diaspora Problems, which we named the #1 album of 2022. Portrayal of Guilt last put out the half-heavy, half-orchestral Devil Music on Run For Cover last year. Soft Blue Shimmer recently released a new single, “Canti.”
