Though Paul Riedl, Morris Kolontyrsky, and Jeff Barrett have certainly been busy with their other band Blood Incantation (who put out a 20-minute, two-song single this year), Spectral Voice‘s (featuring Eli Wendler on drums and vocals) brooding, spooky death/doom metal has been lurking just beneath the surface.
Sparagmos, the band’s second full-length and first proper album since 2017’s Eroded Corridors of Unbeing, shows a band carefully crafting their dark art in secret. While we’ve heard a variety of splits and tour-only demos from this Colorado unit, there is something to be said about the development found on Sparagmos‘ first single, “Red Feasts Condensed Into One,” which is out today. To be released on February 9 via Dark Descent Records in the United States and Napalm Records worldwide (pre-order), Sparagmos features a deeper, more palpable darkness than the death metal oriented material found on various splits released over the past half decade with bands the likes of Phrenelith, Undergang, Anhedonist, and Vastum. Slow is the name of the game here, and Spectral Voice capitalize on these lower digit tempos, crafting terrifying atmospheres with nightcrawler riffs and pummeling percussion.
