Ragana are staples of the DIY scene in and around Olympia, WA, and ahead of the release of their collaborative album with Drowse, Ash Souvenir, they’ve told us about five bands from their local scene that they love. They’ve talked to us about one of these bands before (one of them released one of Ragana’s favorite albums of 2023), and none of these bands have really broken out on a national level, so I think there’s a good chance you’ll learn about something new if you’re not already immersed in the PacNW DIY scene. Ash Souvenir drops this Friday (11/14) via The Flenser, and so far two tracks are out: the title track and a single version of the lengthy opening track “In Eternal Woods Pts. 1-3” (the single version is just Pt. 2-3). The former shows off the album’s slowcore side, while the latter shows off its black metal side, and both tracks are very good. Listen to those below too.
