You may have heard that Knocked Loose‘s upcoming album You Won’t Go Before You’re Supposed To includes a collaboration with metal-adjacent alt-pop artist Poppy, and that collaboration has now arrived. It’s called “Suffocate,” and it sounds more like classic Knocked Loose than you might’ve guessed. Poppy brings a mix of blood-curling screams and spoken word, and she pairs perfectly with Bryan Garris’ own brutal shrieks. Bryan says the song is about “someone stabbing you in the back” and adds, “It was so fun because her voice allowed us to expand our palette and do some weird, off-the-wall things that we maybe wouldn’t do in another song.” Guitarist Isaac Hale says, “We felt that because we had Poppy’s voice involved, it allowed us to kind of push the boundaries of what we thought was feasible.” It comes with an Eric Richter-directed video that Poppy also stars in. Knocked Loose are also gearing up for a tour with Show Me The Body, Loathe,and Speed that hits NYC on May 30 at Brooklyn Steel and May 31 at Terminal 5. All dates are listed below.
The Knocked Loose/Poppy song isn’t the only “poppy” single from a metalcore band out today. Past Knocked Loose tourmates Candy shared the song with MIRSY (the goth-pop project of Fleshwater vocalist Marisa Shirar) and LA electronic musician mmph song off their upcoming album It’s Inside You (due 6/7 via Relapse). It’s called “Love Like Snow” and it’s kind of like a trip-hop song with screaming–pretty cool! It comes with a very cinematic video directed by Michael Quick and starring Christopher Ponds, Rhiannon McMahon and Zak Quiram. Check that out below too.
