Jane’s Addiction have cancelled the remainder of their first tour with their original lineup in 14 years after Perry Farrell threw a punch at Dave Navarro at the band’s Boston show on Friday night (9/13). “To all the fans,” a statement reads, “the band have made the difficult decision to take some time away as a group. As such, they will be cancelling the remainder of the tour. Refunds for the cancelled dates will be issued at your point of purchase – or if you purchase from a third-party resale site like StubHub, SeatGeek, etc, please reach out to them direct. Navarro and bassist Eric Avery also posted a statement on their Instagrams, which reads, “Due to a continuing pattern of behavior and the mental health difficulties of our singer Perry Farrell, we have come to the conclusion that we have no choice but to discontinue the current US tour. Our concern for his personal health and safety as well as our own has left us no alternative. We hope that he will find the help he needs. We deeply regret that we are not able to come through for all our fans who have already bought tickets. We can see no solution that would either ensure a safe environment on stage or reliably allow us to deliver a great performance on a nightly basis. Our hearts are broken.” It’s signed Dave, Eric, and Stephen.
Love & Rockets, who had reunited once again to open all shows, also posted a statement. “We would have loved to have completed the rest of the dates on the tour with Jane’s Addiction but unfortunately the matter is out of our hands,” they write. “Information regarding refunds will follow shortly.”
UPDATE: Navarro also posted an apology to Love & Rockets and Crawlers on his Instagram story, writing, “I would like to personally apologize to Love & Rockets and Crawlers and thier crews for such a terrible outcome of what started off as an incredibly magical tour. Love & Rockets are heroes of mine and I am so grateful I had the opportunity to perform on the same stage as them for as long as I did. It has truly been an honor!”
For Navarro, this tour was to have been his return to Jane’s after being sidelined with long Covid symptoms, which he’d discussed in an interview over the summer, also saying that a new album from the band was “more than likely going to happen.” Following the altercation with Farrell, he posted an Instagram with the caption “Goodnight…”
In a “first person account” of the fight, Farrell’s wife, Etty Lau Farrell, said that his “frustration had been mounting, night after night, he felt that the stage volume had been extremely loud and his voice was being drowned out by the band. Perry had been suffering from tinnitus and a sore throat every night. But when the audience in the first row, started complaining up to Perry cussing at him that the band was planning too loud and that they couldn’t hear him, Perry lost it.”
She continued, “The band started the song Ocean before Perry was ready and did the count off.. The stage volume was so loud at that point, that Perry couldn’t hear pass the boom and the vibration of the instruments and by the end of the song, he wasn’t singing, he was screaming just be to be heard.”
