UK band Higher Power were in the midst of a rapid rise after putting out their early-2020 Roadrunner debut 27 Miles Underwater, but then global lockdown happened, the band parted ways with their label, and their promised 2022 followup album never came. A few singles trickled out over the years, Higher Power found a new label home on Nuclear Blast early last year, and now, they just surprise-released their long-awaited followup to 27 Miles Underwater: There’s Love In This World If You Want It.
The new album opens with last year’s “Absolute Bloom” single, though their other two recent singles (“Fall From Grace” and “Stillpoint”) aren’t here. It also has eight new songs, including “All the Rage,” which has a video that’s out today. Vocalist Jimmy Wizard says:
This album is the natural progression of Higher Power sonically and as a band. This is our first time consciously self producing an album and I am, for once, genuinely excited to put something out that feels really authentic to us as individuals and where we are at as a band.
I just finished my first listen, and it sounds to me like Higher Power’s blend of real-deal hardcore and anthemic alternative rock is in fine form. If you’re new to Higher Power, fans of Leeway, Jane’s Addiction, Smashing Pumpkins, and/or Turnstile should take note. (That last track, “My Sweet Surrender,” is an especially cool Pumpkins-esque power ballad and it’s something that feels kinda new for Higher Power.) Check out the new LP and the new video below.
