Deftones began their headlining tour with The Mars Volta and Fleshwater at Portland, OR’s Moda Center last night (2/25), one day after a Billboard Español interview was published that revealed the band plans to release the followup to 2020’s Ohms “sometime around that time [during the tour.]” “It’s getting very close to being ready,” Chino Moreno said, “so yeah, we’re excited.”
Deftones didn’t play any new material at the first night of the tour, but they did break out two classics that they hadn’t played in years: “Bored” (from their 1995 debut album Adrenaline) for the first time in seven years and “Hole In The Earth” (from 2006’s Saturday Night Wrist) for the first time in six. Fan-shot video of those and other songs have surfaced, and you can watch those clips and see Deftones’ full setlist from the show below.
The Mars Volta, meanwhile, appear to have debuted their entire new album at the show! Details for a new 18-song album called Lucro Sucio; Los Ojos del Vacío recently leaked, and The Mars Volta’s setlist seemingly included all 18 of those songs, without any previously-released material. A power move if I’ve ever seen one. Check out footage of that here.
The show began with a set from heavy shoegazers Fleshwater, who share members with Vein.fm, and who definitely pair very well with the Deftones. They opened with their great new single “Standalone” and filled the rest of their set with songs from their 2022 debut LP We’re Not Here To Be Loved.
The tour continues at Seattle’s Climate Pledge Arena on Thursday (2/27) and hits the NYC-area for shows on April 3 at Madison Square Garden and April 9 at Prudential Center. Deftones and Fleshwater were also both just announced for Atlanta’s Shaky Knees festival yesterday, and Deftones also play two of the rare System Of A Down shows happening this year and a huge London show with Weezer, High Vis, and more.
