Deafheaven have announced Lonely People With Power, their first album in three years and first since they celebrated the 10th anniversary of Sunbather on a truly epic tour. It comes out on March 28 via the band’s new label home, Roadrunner Records, and we’ve got an exclusive “honeyed heat” 2LP vinyl variant up for pre-order in the BV shop, limited to 500. Like its 2021 predecessor Infinite Granite, it was produced by Justin Meldal-Johnsen (M83, Paramore, Jimmy Eat World, etc), and this one features two guest vocalists: Jae Matthews of Boy Harsher and Paul Banks of Interpol (who had Deafheaven open the recent Chicago stop of their Antics 20th anniversary tour). But unlike Infinite Granite, which was primarily not a metal album, lead single “Magnolia” is very much a metal song. Powered by a chuggy, melodeath-leaning riff, pummeling blast beats, and George Clarke’s trademark blackened shrieks, it’s the heaviest Deafheaven song since 2015’s especially punishing New Bermuda, with no sign of their post-rock or shoegazy tendencies at all. Coming off diving deeper than ever into their softer side on Infinite Granite, it’s a treat to hear them swing the pendulum all the way back in the other direction on “Magnolia.” Check out the song and its ominous, black-and-white performance video (directed by Sean Stout and Chelsea Jade) below.
Deafheaven are promising to announce a tour “in the coming days,” but meanwhile, they’ve got festival appearances scheduled, including US festivals Sonic Temple and Welcome to Rockville, and the UK’s Outbreak Fest. All currently announced dates are listed below.
George Clarke also guests on the upcoming EP from Church Tongue, whose guitarist Nicko Calderon is also in Knocked Loose.
