Deafheaven‘s instant-classic sophomore album Sunbather turns 10 this year, and the band is celebrating with a reissue and a 10th anniversary tour with Touché Amoré, whose guitarist Nick Steinhardt designed Sunbather‘s iconic artwork. The reissue was remixed and remastered by the album’s original producer, Jack Shirley, and it comes with updated packaging and a re-release of the original typeface courtesy of Nick Steinhardt. There’s also a gatefold jacket with gloss varnish details and 2 printed inner sleeves with unseen album-era photography. We’ve got an exclusive 2xLP vinyl variant of the reissue, with one “yellow in beer w/ black” splatter disc and one “pink in transparent w/ black splatter” disc. That’s limited to 750 copies worldwide and up for pre-order now.
The reissue comes out November 17 via Deathwish Inc. Here’s a mock-up of our variant:
“Sunbather gave us a career,” reflects guitarist Kerry McCoy. “Before then we were working jobs and had these grandiose dreams, but that was the record that turned us into a real band. Because of that record, we ended up meeting a lot of people around the world that changed our lives and set us on the path we’re on now.”
“The easy answer was it was totally positive and overwhelming,” he says of the response to the album. “But in actuality it was also kind of frustrating. We were grateful for the positive notes, but there were people who thought we were the worst thing to ever happen to metal and others who thought that we claimed to invent the genre. Neither were true.”
The Sunbather tour with Touché Amoré (and currently unannounced guests) goes down this November and December with shows in Chicago, Detroit, Philly, Boston, DC, NYC, San Francisco, LA, Denver, and Austin. Tickets for that run go on sale Friday (7/28) at 10 AM local time. That follows Deafheaven’s lengthy North American run supporting Coheed & Cambria, as well as some UK shows in August.
