Denmark screamo band Demersal are prepping the release of a self-titled album for later this year (release date TBA), and while you wait for more details on that, we’re premiering the first single, “Lys I Natten.” Demersal have always made screamo that sounds big, and they sound huge on this one. Theatrical, impassioned shrieks go up against metallic, Converge-worthy riffs, and the cherry on top are the triumphant horn lines that flesh it out.
“‘Lys I Natten’ is a short, chaotic song about anxiousness, powerlessness, and the grief that occasionally occurs in one’s mind in regard to some of the crises we face today, whether it be the looming climate crisis, war, extremism, etc,” the band says. “There is very little one can do as an individual to fix something so immense, and therefore very little one can do to tame the anxiousness that occurs in one’s body.”
“However, the song is also about privileges,” the band continues. “Even though the fear of loss and the future of the world can seem all-encompassing at times, we, in large parts of the West, have the privilege of being able to forget the same crises, as we do not experience them as closely as other people in the world do. In a way it’s about maintaining awareness of the despair and hopelessness that affects people all over the world, even though it’s sometimes easier to forget. At the same time it’s about maintaining a healthy mind and psyche while doing so, and a way to do so is by sharing your vulnerability and anxiousness with the people you love and trust.”
About the album overall, Demersal add, “The album explores the importance of care and the notion of being there for each other in times of crises, as a way of dealing with a world in decay. It serves as a counterpoint to modern capitalist ideals of self-sufficiency – the notion that one should be a strong individual who’s able to stand up for oneself and one’s own values alone – and it encourages to share one’s vulnerability with caring people and to reach out when the world feels the most incomprehensible.”
