To quote their bio, Baltimore’s Euclid C. Finder! started out in 2017 as “one man with a guitar, a drum machine, and a head full of panic chords,” but it’s since turned into a three-piece band that really started to get going once the Covid-induced lockdown was coming to an end. After putting out two EPs in 2018, founding vocalist Mike Mehl began writing their upcoming debut album The Mirror, My Weapon, I Love You, and guitarist Sean McFarland and drummer Adam Smith eventually made some contributions of their own. It was recorded at Kurt Ballou’s God City Studio with engineer Zach Weeks, and it’s coming out on cassette on October 3 via Zegema Beach Records and on vinyl on November 4 via Dark Trail Records.
We’re premiering the video for new song “Tony Bennett’s Tape Machine Does NOT Like Mathcore,” which was named after a phrase that Zach said during the recording process. “Kurt Ballou had recently purchased an old multitrack tape recorder that belonged to Tony Bennett which was sitting in the corner of the studio during recording,” the band says. “We naturally asked about it, and after some conversation and joking, Zach said the eponymous phrase.”
If you do like mathcore, you’ll probably like this song, which offers up a relentless dose of discordant, grindy chaos in the span of one minute and 45 seconds. “Often, when I am having negative thoughts, it feels like another me, but for a long time I did not recognize this,” Mike says. “This song is about becoming aware that there is another part of me that does not like my existence, and recognizing it as a discrete voice from my regular thought stream.”
