“If you were in Seattle and there was a party, and it was a really good party, one of these Saints records would be playing.” That’s Mudhoney‘s Mark Arm on growing up in Seattle and the impact of The Saints’ first three albums on the scene. “Hugely influential amongst me and my friends.”
Mark has been listening to the Saints a lot, as he’s going on tour with original members Ed Kuepper and Ivor Hay as The Saints ’73-’77, a band that also includes Mick Harvey (The Birthday Party, The Bad Seeds) and Peter Oxley (Sunnyboys), plus a horn section of Eamon Dilworth and Julian Wilson. Mark will be singing the songs of the late Chris Bailey, performing songs from The Saints’ original era.
“I had to wrap my head around Chris Bailey’s phrasing and try to figure out how to sing or vocalize in a manner that would hopefully do him justice,” Mark tells us. “There’s a song on Prehistoric Sounds, ‘All Times Through Paradise,” which is as a vocalist just one of the most difficult things I’ve ever had to wrap my heads around. The phrasing is so odd — changes and the timing are unusual. It’s a great great tune. This whole record is amazing. I can’t be express how humble and grateful I am for being allowed this opportunity to play with these guys, with my heroes and to hopefully do Chris Bailey’s memory justice.”
