“We take a lot of left turns, you know, and we kind of have new references of influence. And I felt like this album, we leaned into our own past in a way where we weren’t referencing some new find or some new path,” Midlake‘s Eric Pulido says on this week’s episode of the BV Interviews Podcast, talking about the band’s wonderful new album A Bridge To Far, which was produced by Sam Evian. “It was just, you’re kind of pulling from the collection of every place that you’ve been. And then you have someone like Sam, objectively kind of going, ‘yeah, let’s, let’s go further down that road.'”
A Bridge Too Far is Midlake’s most Midlake-y record yet, a near-perfect distillation of everything these Denton, TX baroque folk-rock vets have been making for more than two decades. I talked to Eric back in September about the album and how Evian differed from John Congleton, who worked on 2022’s For the Sake of Bethel Woods. Other topics of conversation include getting Ted Lasso actor James Lance to star in the video for “Days Gone By,” which was shot in one take on the streets of New York’s Lower East Side, other songs on the record, upcoming tour plans, the difficulties of covering The Beatles, five records he thinks everyone should own and more.
