OutKast were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on Saturday (11/8) alongside The White Stripes, Soundgarden, Cyndi Lauper, Chubby Checker, Joe Cocker, and Bad Company, following an induction speech by Donald Glover.
OutKast’s own Big Boi also took part in a guest-filled performance of OutKast songs, backed by a live band and backup singers, which André 3000 chose to sit out, despite being in attendance. They did “ATLiens” with Big Boi and JID, “Ms. Jackson” with Doja Cat, “B.O.B.” with Tyler, the Creator, and “Hey Ya!” with Janelle Monáe, and then Big Boi came back out “The Way You Move” with the song’s original guest Sleepy Brown, and the medley ended with everyone on stage together for “The Whole World” with the song’s original guest Killer Mike. If you haven’t seen the performance yet, it’s very worth watching and genuinely cool–not just as far as televised musical performances go but in general.
During OutKast’s acceptance speech, André 3000 got noticeably choked up and referenced something that he and Jack White spoke about earlier that night. “He said something about little rooms, and we started in a little… Great things start in little rooms.” Watch that and a few other related clips from the night below as well.
