Assistant principal of PS 16 in Brooklyn, Erik Van Gunten, has been making a series of music videos with his students where they write educational, motivational lyrics and rap them over beats by some very cool artists. They did one over a Vince Staples song and three over songs by Run the Jewels, which gave them the perfect opportunity to name this project Run the Schools. Better yet, the assistant principal tells us that El-P loves the videos.
The song using the Vince Staples beat is “Sharpen The Saw,” which is about “the importance of working hard to better oneself.” The other three are “Synergize” (which focuses on “the importance of working together as a team”), “The Three Steps” (“the importance of being proactive and taking action before conflicts get worse”), and “Think Win Win” (“[the need] to find solutions to problems that help both parties”). Watch all four videos below (and of course this isn’t the first time we’ve seen talented NYC public school students release covers of cool music.)
