Vince Staples has announced a new album, Cry Baby, which will be out June 5 via Loma Vista. “As the world burns, I have decided to release this album,” Vince said in a statement. The cover features an illustration of a crying baby with blonde hair and an American flag for a diaper.
Cry Baby was teased over the weekend when Vince released the video for “Blackberry Marmalade,” the opening song, via his Substack. The album was made using live instrumentation and you immediately feel that with this one. “The dummies hear a guitar and immediately start calling shit punk rock,” Vince wrote on X. “Rock, Punk, Post-Punk, Grunge, New Wave, Indie Rock, and so on and so forth are all different, but they all come from the Cracka tryna be James Brown.”
The video, which Staples co-directed with Bradley J. Calder, is shot like a first person shooter video game, albeit a very dark and disturbing one that reflects the lyrics, which are about being Black in America. “Anti-establishment, crackers on that shadiness / Crackers watch me work and break my back and shit, they maniacs” is one couplet, and the chorus is “Promise me you won’t gun me down.”
The video got an 18+ age restriction on YouTube and Vince says, “if you are over the age of 18, make sure to share it with the youth around you. Our children deserve the truth.”
