SZA is about to join Kendrick Lamar during his Super Bowl Halftime Show, and just minutes before the performance, she dropped a new deluxe edition of her December 2024 album Lana (itself a deluxe edition of 2022’s SOS) with four new songs: “Joni” (ft. Don Toliver), “Take You Down,” a solo version of “Open Arms” (which featured Travis Scott on SOS), and “PSA.” Listen to the new songs below.
In our review of Lana, we said: At a time in which A-list pop stars are under pressure to have distinctly different “eras,” SZA is more like modern R&B’s answer to the Ramones. As with the New York punk pioneers, the blueprint for a SZA song is instantly recognizable, deceptively simple, and not something that she tends to stray from. From afar, the songs on Lana don’t sound very different from the songs on 2022’s SOS, which Lana was released as a deluxe edition of, but the more you listen, the more each individual song stands tall within SZA’s catalog.
