Stereo MC’s, the UK group known for early ’90s rave-era hits “Connected,” “Elevate My Mind,” “Step it Up” and more, have announced their first US dates in 24 years. (Their last tour was with Jane’s Addiction in 2001.) It’s currently just three Northeast shows: Philly’s Union Transfer on January 23, Brooklyn’s Music Hall of Williamsburg on January 24, and Boston’s The Sinclair on January 25. Tickets for those go on sale Friday, October 11 at 10 AM.
Founded by vocalist Rob Birch and DJ Nick Hallam, who also co-founded influential label Gee Street Records (PM Dawn, Gravediggaz), Stereo MCs haven’t made a record since 2011 but say there is stuff in the works. “There’s a lot of new music that’s being developed as we go, some club orientated in keeping with our label and recent outlook, and some more in the Stereo MC’s known moul,” says Nick. “When the two merge as one we will be there.” Rob adds, “There are many influences in the melting pot being shaped by this time we live in. In the same way as we look back for inspiration, we are charged by the present and that’s how we work: combining old methods with modern technology. The more diverse our music becomes the happier I feel.”
Stereo MC’s just wrapped up a tour with Happy Mondays who they also toured with in the early ’90s (City Gardens in Trenton included), and are on a headline UK tour now. All dates are listed below.
