Soulwax‘s David and Stephen Dewaele have been on the promo circuit pretty hard for All Systems Are Lying, the band’s first album in seven years, and as part of that they appeared on Tim Sweeney‘s long-running Beats in Space radio show, which these days airs via Apple Music. Somehow this was the first time they’d ever been on the show. “Well, it was always like, it was about to happen so many times,” Stephen tells Tim, “and then we ended up going for dinner with James [Murphy].”
For their first appearance on BiS, Soulwax made a mix called “I ❤️ NY.” This is a more loose, experimental mix than the pure endorphin rush you get with a Dewaele 2ManyDJs mix, but it’s still seamless, surprising and fun with some amazing runs, like opening with The Philip Glass Ensemble into Rammellzee & K Rob, or Blondie into Chic into The Waitresses into David Byrne / Brian Eno into Gong into Yeah Yeah Yeahs into Dee-Lite, and later New Order into Metro Area into The Velvet Underground into Le Tigre. There’s also Beastie Boys, LCD Soundsystem, !!!, Run DMC and more.
“New York was such a big part of our lives,” Stephen tells Sweeney. “Both Dave and me had girlfriends here. We all met James and Tim [Goldsworthy], other Tim, as we called them, other Tim. And we would hang out. And it was just the beginning of a whole thing. A thing which, I think, for us has never been, we never name it something, but for a lot of people, it seems to be a period that they draw back on now and they talk about…so, yeah, but New York was such a big, big, big part of our lives.”
