Light Asylum, the dark synthpop project led by force of nature Shannon Funchess, released their self-titled debut in 2012 via Mexican Summer, and it remains their only full-length release. While it’s always been available on streaming services, the original vinyl often fetches over $100 on the secondary market. Enter friend James Murphy, who is reissuing the album via DFA on October 13. Says the label: “It’s the kind of record cherished by Those Who Know: perfectly crafted, spiritually commanding synth-pop with a voice that sounds like some kind of goth oracle from beyond. It’s simply too good to remain out of print.”
The album has been remastered by Bob Weston and the packaging reproduces the original’s gatefold jacket, printed insert, and 24” x 36” fold-out poster, but tweaks the cover, which now features only one photo of Shannon instead of three.
To celebrate the reissue, Light Asylum are playing Brooklyn’s Elsewhere Hall on October 19, with Cuneiform also on the bill.
