After a couple of scaled down tours featuring acoustic guitars, accordions and original songs, “Weird Al” Yankovic has brought his hit parodies, costumes and theatrical stage show back out for the Bigger & Weirder tour, which hit NYC’s Madison Square Garden on Saturday (7/12). It was his first time playing the iconic venue, and he told the crowd he needed “just 149 more shows here to tie with Billy Joel.”
The show opened with “Tacky,” his parody of Pharrell’s “Happy,” and also included “Smells Like Nirvana,” “Another One Rides the Bus,” “Fat,” “White & Nerdy,” “Amish Paradise,” and more, most of which involved costume changes. There was also a rapid-fire medley featuring even more of his parodies — “I Love Rocky Road,” “Eat It,” “Like a Surgeon” — where he had a different outfit for each bit. He also did his DEVO tribute “Dare to Be Stupid” and ’50 doo-wop sendup “One More Minute,” and for fans of the accordion there was “Polkamania!”
The encore was all Star Wars themed with Al and the band coming out dressed as Stormtroopers and Jedis. He sang “We All Have Cellphones” before playing “American Pie” parody “The Saga Begins,” and finished with “Yoda,” his parody of The Kinks’ “Lola.”
Sad clown Puddles Pity Party made for a great opener and his set included Bond theme parody “Come Cry With Me,” covers of Ozzy’s “Crazy Train” and Los Lobos’ “Estoy Sentado Aquí,” and a mashed up version of the Gilligan’s Island theme with “Stairway to Heaven” against projected images of Kevin Costner’s infamous film Waterworld. After that, he covered Celine Dion’s “My Heart Will Go On” by way of Metallica’s “Enter Sandman,” continuing his Costner tribute with a slideshow of photos behind him.
