Sylvia Plath‘s seminal semi-autobiographical memoir The Bell Jar is getting a new film adaptation, and Billie Eilish is in “advanced talks” to star in it, Deadline reports. She’d play the main character, Esther Greenwood, and it would be her debut role in a film (she has acted for TV though, in Donald Glover and Janine Nabers’ Prime Video series Swarm). There are no plans for her to contribute music to the film at the moment, but perhaps that could change? Stay tuned.
Sarah Polley (Women Talking, Away From Her) will direct and write the screenplay, and Deadline says Focus Features is closing a deal to back and distribute the film in the US, with Joy Gorman Wettels, Plan B Entertainment, and StudioCanal producing.
A Larry Peerce-directed adaptation of the book came out in 1979, but there have been multiple other scrapped attempts to addapts it, including one starring Julia Stiles in 2007, and one with Kirsten Dunst directing and Dakota Fanning starring in 2017.
