Last week, the Tompkins Square Dog Run announced the cancellation of their beloved annual Halloween parade for 2023 and the “foreseeable future” due to construction in the parks and permitting and insurance costs. It’s now back on, however, as Fairfield County, CT dog wellness startup Get Joy has stepped in to help. “”We are beyond thrilled to announce that the 2023 Halloween Dog Parade is back on,” parade organizer and Tompkins Square Park Dog Run volunteer Joseph Borduin said. “This wouldn’t have been possible without the cooperation of Councilwoman Carlina Rivera, Mayor Eric Adams, city agencies, the NYPD, and with the generous support of Get Joy.”
“This parade has been a cherished tradition for 32 years, capturing the essence of New York City’s vibrant dog-loving community,” dog author and TSPDR communications officer Fern Watt added. “It’s a celebration of joy, creativity and the unbreakable bond between humans and their four-legged best friends. It’s basically the Met Gala for the Canine Community. We’ve been overcome by the amazing display of support from our community, so call the pup-arazzi: the show will go on!”
The parade happens on Saturday, October 21 from 1-3 PM, and while details are still being arranged, there will be a parade route on Avenue B and 7th St with “activities, services, and sample stations,” and prizes awarded in costume categories including Best in Show, People’s Choice, Most Creative, and more.
The parade was also cancelled then saved in 2018, when it was moved to East River Park Amphitheater.
