Formed in 1981 by vocalist King Diamond and guitarist Hank Shermann, Mercyful Fate didn’t offer up their first official release until the following year, dropping the infamous self-titled EP also known as Nuns Have No Fun. As shocking and uncompromising as that was, the band’s debut full-length, 1983’s Melissa, upped the occult heavy-metal ante — and made such an impression on a young Metallica that the thrash OGs covered four songs off Melissa for their Garage Inc. “Mercyful Fate” medley.
