The only song from the demo session that was formally released was \"In Defense of Humans,\" which appeared on the State of the Union compilation in 1989. Now, some 26 years later, Dischord is releasing the entire first demo including the one song (\"Turn Off Your Guns\") that wasn't included on the original cassette. As fans of Queen, we thought it would be fun and ridiculous to try to adapt their high-powered pop song into our realm. Since that was recorded and mixed very hastily, we have remixed it to better match our current aesthetics. We have also remixed and included the version of “Norway\" we did at that same session. We wrote and recorded “I Do Not Care for the Winter Sun” during a break between tours and released it on the internet for free, unmastered. Well, it’s finally been mastered…\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003e“Wherever You Go” is another song from that era.  We always loved this song but thought it sounded too much like our old music. We didn’t finish it until 2011 during the\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cem\u003eBloom\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003erecording session. It appeared originally as a secret song on\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cem\u003eBloom\u003c\/em\u003e. “Equal Mind” was also recorded during the\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cem\u003eBloom\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003esession, but we left it off the record after realizing it had the exact same tempo as “Other People.” “Saturn Song” is built on a piano loop we wrote while recording\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cem\u003eBloom\u003c\/em\u003e, and contains sounds recorded in deep space. Critically lauded and deemed very much worth the wait, Interiors succeeded in reestablishing the band as the powerful and contemporary entity they had always been.\u003cbr\u003eDistant Populations has a punchier, more up-tempo sound than it's predecessor; it's 11 songs are concise, carved sonic jewels boasting not a single wasted note; and it's raw power, it's gripping lyricism, leaps out from the very first listening. It is a striking step up for the band. The songwriting itself had been no minor process: Following the release of Interiors, the band successfully toured around the world and in the process fully re-established their chemistry together. Looking forward to making the next album, the three of them-frontman\/ guitarist Walter Schreifels, bassist Sergio Vega, and drummer Alan Cage-had methodically recorded various soundchecks, improvisations, and show rehearsals, and compiled the results. \"Eventually, when it came time to make a record,\" Schreifels says, \"we would just edit down to the ones that were most exciting to us all, and then refocus on them and see if we could recapture the magic from it.\" There may be a final irony in the title of Distant Populations. As always, a poison-tipped dart is pointed at the government, media, and major entertainment outlets. Ian MacKaye's \"destroy your television\" rant on \"Polish\" is one of the more direct and simple songs. His \"KYEO\" comes straight from the rice paddy or homefront, depending on interpretation. It urges the listener to always remain aware, whether awaiting the enemy's next battle move or remaining blissfully unaware of how people can be taken advantage of by others. As with the rest of the band's catalog, lyrics are provided in the booklet. This makes things much easier on the intent listener, as both Picciotto and MacKaye have weird voices that become unintelligible when howled over their instrumental din. In the time that’s elapsed since Habit, her 2016 EP, Jordan has graduated high school, toured the country, opened for the likes of Girlpool and Waxahatchee as well as selling out her own headline shows, and participated in a round-table discussion for The New York Times about women in punk -- giving her time to reflect and refine her songwriting process by using tempered pacings and alternate tunings to create a jawdropping debut both thoughtful and cathartic. Recorded with producer Jake Aron and engineer Johnny Schenke, with contributions from touring bandmates drummer Ray Brown and bassist Alex Bass as well, Lush sounds cinematic, yet still perfectly homemade. “Is there any better feeling than coming clean?” sings the eighteen-year-old guitarist and songwriter halfway through the sprawling anthem that is “Pristine,” the album’s first single. You can’t help but agree with her. It’s a hook that immediately sticks in your head—and a question she seems to be grappling with throughout the record’s 10-songs of crystalline guitar pop. Throughout Lush, Jordan’s clear and powerful voice, acute sense of pacing, and razor-sharp writing cut through the chaos and messiness of growing up: the passing trends, the awkward house parties, the sick-to-your-stomach crushes and the heart wrenching breakups.
