The band was eventually rounded out by frontman Davey von Bohlen, who at the time was a new enlistee into Midwest darlings Cap'n Jazz but gave The Promise Ring their crucial missing piece. In 1996, the group signed with Jade Tree and released their debut, 30 Degrees Everywhere: a powerful introduction that distilled the spirit and vigor of some of the members' punk and hardcore backgrounds and spit-shined it with von Bohlen's tastefully angsty melodicism. But 30 Degrees Everywhere is deceptively complex, masked by layers of driving guitars and buoyant rhythms. It's also deceptively dark, as the singer's heart-on-sleeve lyrics - tackling love, loss, regret and disappointment - and emotive delivery were hallmarks of The Promise Ring's genre-leading sound. This raw emotion, along with an overall lack of Polish, ultimately gives the album an endearing personality. You won't find perfect performances here; rather, you're getting real songs about real life played by real people in real time. Boiled down, 30 Degrees Everywhere is the foundation of a musical legacy, a lightning-in-a-bottle musical moment that demands listeners pay attention to it's urgency and passion - in the end, what more could you ask for?

LABEL: Epitaph
VINYL RELEASE DATE: 10/5/2018
ORIGINAL RELEASE DATE: 2002
VARIANT: Black Vinyl 2LP

Hailing from Milwaukee, WI The Promise Ring weren't just emblematic of '90s Midwestern emo: they were one of the most celebrated bands in the history of the genre. Under the leadership of frontman Davey Von Bohlen of Cap'n Jazz, their sound incorporated elements of power pop that would become more popular in later years. They broke up in 2002 and after nearly a decade of inactivity The Promise Ring officially reunited in February 2012. Wood/Water (2002) is the fifth and final album to date by The Promise Ring, and their first for Anti- Records. Long-time fans may have been surprised with Wood/Water, as it's sound was a departure from the band's previous releases. The band showed it doesn't always have to be such a pity party, and that catharsis can come in many forms, particularly in the naively optimistic power-pop of Nothing Feels Good. The pioneering band walked the line between brusque sentimentality and uplifting hooks, making them emo's first pop emissaries. Cheap Trick for hardcore kids. If Fountains of Wayne, Sebadoh, and Jonathan Richman had an emo love-child, Nothing Feels Good might be it's name. The record was a high point for many fans of the band, and is considered one of the pillars of the genre. Perhaps because of this light-hearted yet concentrated approach, Nothing Feels Good landed with the kind of fanfare that hadn't been seen for a band from emo's sophomore class, selling over 50,000 records in it's initial run. Considering a good run for some of their peers was around 10,000 to 15,000 albums, Nothing Feels Good was veritable emo-platinum.

TRACKLIST

- Side 1 -
1 Is This Thing On?
2 Perfect Lines
3 Red & Blue Jeans
4 Why Did Ever We Meet
5 Make Me a Chevy
6 How Nothing Feels
- Side 2 -
1 A Broken Tenor
2 Rasberry Rush
3 Nothing Feels Good
4 Pink Chimneys
5 B Is for Bethlehem
6 Forget Me

THE PROMISE RING ‘30º EVERYWHERE’ 30TH ANNIVERSARY LP (Exclusive – Limited to 300, Citrine Vinyl) + ZINE

LABEL: JADE TREE
RELEASE DATE: 11/27/2026
VARIANT: Citrine Vinyl LP + Zine

THE PROMISE RING ‘30º EVERYWHERE’ 30TH 30th anniversary edition includes 2 bonus tracks, remixed by J.
